Chapter Twenty-Four

Ryland

Was their walk here as long as the journey back? It felt like ages to get out of the maze of canvas and dirt and bodies.

A bald rider with a half-healed scar covering his face stepped in their path. Ryland stepped around him and pulled Meilene with him. She squawked at how roughly Ryland handled her, but he did not let go.

A noise from behind made him jump, but it was merely the betting tables getting rowdy. All of his senses were on high alert, especially after Senan pointed out that their attempts to blend in had failed splendidly.

As if reading his mind, Raph quickened his pace until he was on the other side of Meilene. His friend looked as stressed as he felt when they passed another rambunctious group.

At the next turn, Blaise slipped past a group to investigate a lively game of dice. He sauntered over with his hands behind his back and not a care in the world. Did he really just leave at a time like this?

Ryland was a fool to ever trust him. Lora was clearly mistaken about whatever redeeming qualities her brother had.

The prior euphoria from watching the races evaporated as he became hyperfocused on the jeers their group was receiving. As much as they attempted to dress down to blend it, some of their party stuck out, no matter the dreariness of the borrowed riding jackets they complained about. It had been a good while since he and Maleth set foot or wing within this place. He forgot how rough some of the attendees were. Most women here were either participating in the races, in the betting, or else present for other frivolous activities.

He should have known Meilene would always stick out wherever, no matter where they went or how they dressed her. One of the merchants tried selling her a cracked plate from ancient times, while another had a potion that he said would heal all ailments for both riders and dragons. Something about being the Reina drew others toward her, and that was opposite of their goal.

A robed lady stepped in front of their path, holding a cracked bowl filled with bones and dragon scales. In her palm she held a rune with three connected lines. It was the soothsayer.

A gravelly voice spoke, low and quiet but clear as a dragon’s roar. “Do you want to know what the scales say about you and your bloodlines, my lady rider?”

“Sorry, we’re out of coin.” Ryland tugged her hand, but Meilene stared at the rune in front of her.

“This one I’ll do in exchange for a favor of my choosing.”

Meilene opened her mouth, but Ryland was too familiar with their tricks and knew that few had been known to be more trouble than they were worth. “Definitely not. We’re leaving.”

The soothsayer refused to budge. “But the scales rarely sing so clearly and with so much devotion. They call to you, lady, as surely as the sirens call to a lost sailor.”

Meilene was bemused by this and seemed to hold back laughter.
